Can I do it? I've been cutting down bit by bit this year, I reckon it's doable. If I put it up here it'll give me peer pressure and an extra incentive.

Anyone else thinking of doing this?
i have not touched a drop for about 6 yrs now ..... do it

HUH dont understand the question im scottish ???

Doctors say red wine is good to prevent heart disease

Beer is made from hops, Hops are a fruit therefore must be classed as 1 of your 5 a day surely ;-)

Wine is made from grapes so there is another 1 of your 5 a day ;-) RESULT!!!

You should do it. If you're ready for it and think it's doable, of course. I've heard many people say it's a good thing. I don't think i'm ready for it.. yet.

I figure there are lots of great peeps out there doing their very best to make some stupendously tasty ales. I fully intend to sample their efforts. How about upping the quality and drinking just a wee bit less? A shame to knock it totally on the head.

It's only for a year.

Perhaps bromfb could take up something else tasty instead - experiment with teas or coffees, or even unusual fruit juices. Develop and train a palate that might then appreciate the fine ales more?

I have, in the past, been teetotal for several years with not even alcohol in cooking passing my lips.
Likewise I also did several years of celibacy.

Neither was a problem, though I couldn't give up cake, or chocolate, or haribo.

I don't drink alcohol at all, tbh, unless you really enjoy drinking, it is not exactly living a life of depravity to not drink alcohol. That being said, if you really enjoy it, why deprive yourself?

I've gone teetotal for a year or two three times now and I'm sure that you have at least as much willpower as me, so yes - go for it!

Going booze-free helped me lose a lot of weight, save a lot of money and get really fit, but I missed it so I always eventually started up again.

I've not had any alcohol for about 4 months. I decided that it would be sensible to lay off it while I am getting over my clotting problems since excessive drinking can make clotting more likely (plus - I felt too poorly to cope with hangovers!).

In an ideal world, I'd never drink two days on the trot, and I'd limit myself to 4 pints on the drinking nights, but even that would be about 50% over the recommended limits. If I get back to full health, I might settle for that as a reasonable compromise between pleasure and health & fitness.

I dont drink much anyway so it makes no odds to me.

Also i know an alchoholic and when you see a person having to drink just to function it puts you off.
This is one of the reasons for my effort to go dry, a few good friends are either alcoholics in denial or recovering alcoholics....it has cost both sorts everything. Plus in my mental health training I've seen the dark side of booze too much, which got me thinking....could I do what I preach?

Another benefit, my booze money will go to a new bike. I said I'd try in 2012 and failed miserably early on...this time I'm ready.
