I was teetotal and celibate for a few years - 0-6yrs old if I remember correctly.
I can't claim the teetotal bit .... alcohol was medicinal in my family (even my teetotal aunt kept a bottle for when she was ill - and no she didn't drink it normally). I used to like not being able to get to sleep at night.

(First taste of alcohol I was still in the hospital according to my rellies, my grandad brought it in).

Why do you have to explain why you don't want something? If someone asks me if I want a drink when it is their round, I will ask for the drink I want, usually a Coke or Pepsi. If they say, you don't want a beer? I just say, no, I don't drink alocohol. It ends there, no need to explain yourself.

I tell you what Shaun - over the duration of 2013, I will try and cycle at least 20 miles for every day that you don't drink! (That means if you manage a 'dry' year, I would need to ride 7,300 miles, probably about 30% more than my best cycling year so far.)

This is one of the reasons for my effort to go dry, a few good friends are either alcoholics in denial or recovering alcoholics....it has cost both sorts everything. Plus my mental health training I've seen the dark side of booze too much, which got me thinking....could I do what I preach?

Another benefit, my booze money will go to a new bike. I said I'd try in 2012 and failed miserably early on...this time I'm ready.

That's a good idea, to save the money, gives you an extra incentive. I'd go as far as physically putting the cash aside - either literally, a pound or two each time you don't have a drink, or work out what you normally spend and put that aside a month. If you can actually see it building up in a jar or tin, it's inspiring (I save small change - any coins I get with the new 'Royal Standard' reverse. Got about £70 in a tin for a treat sometime)

I'd suggest setting your targets one at a time. Do it for January. Then February. Then March etc. Eventually, it'll have become habit, plus you'll have the money incentive.

I run a restaurant alcohol can be your enemy its easy to say yes to a drink when a punter wants to buy one,or i will have it latter,i just prefer to use the lent excuse for lent its just a discipline i use, saying that i have gone over a year with out a drink, its just how i deal with it:cheers:

Sorry, I don't see the attraction in a booze-free year.
I don't have to drink - I didn't touch a drop last week due to illness - but I sure do like it
Just surrounded most of a bottle of Puligny Montrachet with my dinner (jerk tuna, peppers and sauteed spuds, then some Cheddar, then some mango, since you're asking) and after some time away from the grape it does feel good.

I skipped the pub tonight and am thinking of restricting my self at our Friday Night Party but I don't think I could abstain altogether in company, I could on my own though.

Yep - easily doable, I reckon. I have just consumed my first alcohol for 2 months and didn't miss it at all. It's just about being sociable, for me anyway. I don't have booze in the house any more and prefer the taste of a nice cuppa or a Pepsi Max to be honest! Thinking of stopping all together but as mentioned up-thread I think it's equally fine to just have one if you happen to feel like it. Can take it or leave it, these days (must be getting old).
