Little known fact: the biggest Guinness brewery in the world is not in Dublin but in Lagos, Nigeria, where I'm going on Sunday. I don't drink it though as it's completely different to Irish Guinness. Why Nigeria? Because the Irish missionaries brought Guinness with them; the bitter taste appeals to the African palate and the drink has a therapeutic/tonic image.

Quite a strange brewing process. A barley wort is shipped to Nigeria and then blended with local sorghum. The nigerian version's pretty strong too.

Pub near me, which I may have visited on Saturday night , doesn't sell lager - won't have the filthy muck on the premises.

Went to an odd bar a couple of weeks ago. You couldn't order in the conventional sense - you described what tastes you like and then the owner selected a beer for you.

You can get an Irish brewed 'Foreign Extra' too at 7.5% (you'll know that though!), just happen to have one in stock.

Not too bad actually! Hadn't previously heard of the two brews he chose, so it was good to try something new.

If you invest in some large stainless steel stockpots (plastic will work), read a little and have a smidge of patience then you can brew your own beer of any character you like

Homebrew kits are amazing these days. I've just enjoyed two very nice bottles of Woodfordes Headcracker (around 8%) at a cost of a quid a pint. The last brew of decent bitter worked out at 30p a pint!
