is it a dumb idea to ride out to Brixton to bike hunt?

Not at all! Near my neck of the woods.

Everyone bangs on about Brixton Cycles. It's a good place to look, but don't neglect Apex Cycles on Clapham High Street. It's a realy nice place and I've only had good experiences there, whereas Brixton Cycles have wound me up a bit.

excellent, anyone know any shops that carry cargo bikes, looking for something I can build up cheaply with existing 26" rims and running gear then swap over to better kit later when I can afford to.

So Surly Big Dummy and Yuba Mondo are current thoughts (the Kona has 700C wheels which means I need to buy so much stuff I might as well buy a bike).

So Bikefix for the Yuba and Brixton Cycles for the Surly, not sure what else to look for/where but open to options.

other than the fact that they handle like pigs and I am awful at navigation everything was fine, I rode for miles and didn't get run over or anything

Cars drivers respect boris bikes. They know in the event of an accident their car will be worse off than the bike. They just hose you off the bike and re-rack for the next passenger.
