Bottom Bracket

Would you expect a bottom bracket bearing on a bike to be covered by the 12 month warranty? I had one fail after about 4 months but didn't get round to taking the bike back until 9 months. The LBS did the repair and when I queried the (unexpected) bill they agreed to waive it but said that a bottom bracket was wear and tear and not covered by the guarantee. Partly my fault for not getting round to taking it back but what do you CCers think?

It depends on the type of BB and the mileage you have put on it. The external cup BB's like GXP and the newer Shimano ones seem to have a shorter life than the old square taper ones. I got 10k miles out of my last GXP BB but Royles in Wilmslow when I bought a new one were surprised by that and suggested 4k to 5k miles would be what they would expect.

I think if you'd taken it back straight away then maybe, but after 9 months I wouldn't expect a new one tbh.
They are a consumable item nowadays, I've had some last barely 2000 miles and others last for 5-6k, they are cheap enough though so not a disaster if they do fail prematurely.

The bike shop only have your word for it that it failed after 4 months. You should have taken it back then. You did well to get the bill waived.

This is one of those repairs I need to learn to do. The waiting list can easily be 2 weeks to get a professional to look at anything around here.

The service from the shop was great. Bike taken in about 4pm. They rang to say it was fixed about an hour later. Looks like I was lucky to get it for nothing - no fuss needed in fact.

I will definitely go back there. Nice job - The Cycle Centre - Congleton.
