Not sure if this is the right section for this so please move it if it isn't. I bought a bike off another classifieds it arrived a couple of days ago. The seller described the bike as being in good condition and having had a recent service, and admittedly it looked alright from the photos. When it arrived I found that the frame/forks had some pretty deep scratches on, the bar tape was ripped along one side, hubs were noisy, rear wheel not true, headset was grinding and the gears needed adjusting. I can appreciate that the bike wouldn't be in perfect condition and might need some adjusting, particularly after transport, but I really didn't expect a bike that has supposedly just been serviced to be that bad. Also, the cosmetic damage is mostly on one side of the bike, which leads me to suspect someone might have come off it at some point, although I've quickly checked the frame and it seems to be alright. I normally always do deals like this face to face but I guess this occasion must have been a lapse in judgement.
I've emailed the seller to try and sort this out, but I've yet to receive a reply, and before the bike arrived he was very swift in replying. I'm willing to believe that he is busy for whatever other reason and can't check his emails for a little bit longer, before I try another approach.
I paid with PayPal so I imagine I can get a refund, but the cost of posting the bike back leaves me pretty out of pocket (£35-40 looking at Parcelforce) and really I don't want any extra drama. I figured maybe getting a partial refund to cover getting the bike serviced properly ( or at least servicing the hubs/headset) and the rest of the damage I'll just chalk up to bad experience.
Has anyone ever experienced something like this? Should I cut to the chase and raise a PayPal dispute straight away?
