Bournemouth cycling speed limits

I don't think you understood. What I was saying was I don't really have a problem with a 10mph speed limit at all at core times if it meant the opening up of a few promenades and so called pedestrianized zones. 10mph seems reasonable enough in quite a few places. I'm well aware these sorts of speed limits don't work. There's an advisory 10mph speed limit through the core of Sheffield City centre for all motor vehicles. Anybody stick to it? No.

It's just a bit of legislation for the moaners to give them a bit of pleasure.

Sorry, yes, I went of on one a bit - I did see your point. As I said:

If speed limits worked, then that might have the same effect. Timed Pedestrian zones work and are allowed because people think (not always rightly) that cars can be controlled by law. For some reason, bikes seem to be thought of as needing a more blunt stick...

They did it by the rail beats, a standard rail was 60 feet long so so-many clickety clacks in a minute is 60 mph, when they were doing it all day every day they just got used to the rhythm of 60 mph etc.

Why would a 'real' cyclist want to ride weaving in and out of tourists on a promenade?

A real cyclist would surely understand the logic of the situation and ride slowly, whereas an attention seeking POB would ride at speed, recklessly, selfishly & dangerously, and deserve to be pulled by the fuzz (police, not hair).

Most 'real' cyclists I know want to get somewhere and enjoy the ride, and wouldn't be interested in dodging Mr & Mrs Shell-suit and their '99 slurping tracksuit-wearing kids.

At least that's my opinion. FWIW.

Yes, I think you're right - once again, the law proves less than useful, since the people it's aimed at are those perhaps less likely to obey it anyway....

I totally agree, and tried to say that. My concern is that the authorities will consider this ban/speed limit a success in one place and then decide to transfer it elsewhere, where it would actually affect real cyclists (?and commuters).

Judging by the turn of speed you had in the velodrome last weekend, you are rightly worried about speed limits for cyclists

It's an arbitrary time. Many vehicle restricted areas finish earlier than this. 10am-4/5pm would be more in line with what you'd expect. However, only in July and August does this seem more generous than it might have been. 6pm also doesn't allow those that might commute to use it.

Because everybody has got to be back at their B&B's changed and ready for tea by 6pm and if they miss that theyv'e had it until breakfast the next morning. I have seen it happen on Swanage beach it is like an exodus, one minute the beach is crowded the next you and maybe a few other daytrippers are the only one's left.

Fair enough. It's something that has to be weighed up against cycling culture though, rather than dictate it.
