Ok, so it's Friday and if like me you're sitting at your desk with a bacon and egg sandwich sporting a disagreeable hangover this may not be something you wish to contemplate.

However.

A mate has recently taken the plunge into cycling, and while discussing all the kit he mentioned people at his work say going commando in the lycra shorts is the best way.

Currently I wear boxers under the lycra, but in doing this am I losing valuable aerodynamics and setting myself up for unnecessary chafage if the boxer alignment goes wrong? Haven't had any issues in the 18 months I've been wearing the budgies, just wondering...

Bin the boxers - you don't want any material causing friction - it isn't funny. Good shorts with good pads. If you don't want to look like spiderman, you can wear baggy kit over the top, but close fitting good shorts are a must.

Even with good shorts you can sometimes get chaffing - hence using a chamois cream (or Aqueous cream - much cheaper, Sudacrem too) can reduce friction. Once you get chaffing, and you are riding every day, it can be very difficult for the damage to get better as you'll just irritate it each time you ride.

I am surprised you've got away with it for so long with boxers.

I've never thought of wearing padded shorts as going commando.

Bibs are designed to be worn naked underneath - if you are going to wear boxers you may as well just wear a pair of jeans over the top. Or in my case wear sandpaper undies, as I chafe like a bugger.

I sometimes wear underpants, sometimes go commando, depends if I'm going to the gym or from the gym on the way to work...
