It is said that a picture paints a thousand words, but your two pictures have left me completely baffled, I'm intrigued, what's the message?
"Message" sounds rather more profound than is warranted!

OP said they planned a ride up Box Hill on Boxing Day. I'd already planned a ride up Box Hill for that evening (xmas eve) (I live close enough that it's my favourite clear-the-cobwebs about-an-hour jaunt from home, plus or minus Norbury Park and Ranmore). So I thought I'd take a picture while I was there, partly in recognition of the synchronicity, and partly as any excuse to celebrate the joys of night-time riding - your own little pool of light with darkness all around. Because TBH one hill at night can look pretty much like another, I took the photos on the bit of the zigzags where they painted white squiggly lines for the Olympics because that pins it down as Box Hill. Although I note a distressing number of people upthread discussing routes from the Headley side and thereby missing the joys of the zigzags...

There, was that a thousand words?

It felt like it...

The overnight snow and ice put a stop to any plans I had. Did you get out?
You made the right decision. We left the Buchanan Arms and I did here a warning shouted from a local, "Your brave boys going down that road with this ice." I obviously ignored it, as he was obviously senile. It was cold and I stopped after a mile to pull my neck tube over my ears, but carried on enjoying the view of the snow covered hills and the winter sun. We were dodging thick patches of black ice but around 7 miles in we encountered a downhill section covered in sheet ice. I really wznted to turn back and call it a day but one wanted to push on until another went down on his ass. We about turned and pushed the bikes back up the hill and carefully picked our way back to the hotel for a swim and a sauna. I'm running out of ideas as to where to go to get a good run.

The snow prompted us to take the car down to Gourock and then bikes on the ferry to Dunoon for an ice free ride round the coast to Loch Striven for a 'drum up' as the sun went down.
