After many years of potholes, craters and patches large streches of the main road between Huddersfield and Holmfirth are in the process of being completely resurfaced. All the top layer has been removed, and new asphalt laid. It's a lovely surface now. White paint has been marked round any and all imperfections in the sections not being completely re-done, so I'm assuming they are going to correct these faults too. When they've finished it will, without a doubt be the best road surface in Kirklees by a long way.

I'm sure that the fact that the road just happens to be the route for next years tour is entirely coincidental, and that Kirklees are going to bring all roads up to this standard.......... oh, and apparantly I've just won 20m in the Nigerian state lottery....

Cragg Vale is all marked up for repairs too. All numbered and counting down from the bottom. It was surface dressed about 5 or 6 years ago.
There are also lines counting down the kms to the summit from the bottom, 8.83kms then 8 to 0.
Whitworth road (Rochdale-Bacup) has been dressed in the last week or so. You have to ride in the left car wheel track or you risk at best stopping in a drift of chips or worse coming off. At least it forces you into a proper secondary position!

We live near some quarries. The best local roads are the ones regularly used by trucks to and from the quarries. These same companies resurface the roads (or at least transport the gravel used for it) but then, in fairness, their trucks do the most damage too. I'm sure there's nothing untoward in the relationship between these companies and the local authority (more one of mutual benefit if anything) but I'd guess there is some conversation beyond strict business.

I was a passenger in a six person people carrier to and from the Alps at the end of March. I had plenty of time to gaze at the French autoroutes. Billiard smooth tarmac. The thing that really struck me though was the dead straight white line that marked the hard shoulder. Not a wiggle in hundreds of kilometres, and I was geekily fascinated.

Mind you, it comes at a price. France is pretty much bankrupt. Lovely and glorious and beautiful....but bust.

I got back from the French Alps last week. It cost me 80 euros in tolls each way, and diesel prices were the same as the UK.

Really? I commented only a couple of days ago that there was a differential between petrol and diesel in France which we don't have to the same extent.

There is - petrol is more expensive than the UK. About 1.70 euro/ litre as I recall.

Leeds City Council are a dab hand with painting around potholes and missing sections of tarmac. I used to think it was that repairs were being marked out and were imminent. Actually that seems not to be the case.
Now I feel it's a kind of safety measure whereby dangerous sections of road are 'highlighted' so as to give fair warning to any cyclist/motorcyclist/prampusher that happens along. To be fair to the council they do keep up to the job. After about a year they come back and re-paint over the old markings and also mark around any new dangers.
Nice to know they care.

So are Spain, Italy, Portugal, Great Britain and the USA.
The difference with dealing with issues, in France at least, is that they do the job first and think of the cost after. In Britain, they talk about it for years, then talk some more and then decide it is too expensive and give it to the private sector who just do it on the cheap at inflated prices to the taxpayer.

I'd agree to a point. From my pov, they do like to do a lot of talking about doing things here in France. It seems everyone is consulted, anyone with any possible involvement or opinion. Seems to me sometimes that just about all levels of bureaucracy have to stamp and sign off. And equally have the ability to delay and stall a process if they don't agree. Which is, I guess, as it should be. It can be a frustratingly long process though. But, yes, cost is merely a factor and not the only one. It's not the deal maker or breaker. Well, until recently that is. Even France is being dragged (rightly or wrongly) into global capitalism and the notion that 'things have to be paid for'.

Been a while since I have seen one of the surfaces mentioned in North Wales. Most of the road around here are in good condition, and the ones that get resurfaced have it done immediately.
