DSLR has been done to death in various threads.

Any views on the currently available Bridge Cameras?

Mrs B lets me use a Fuji s2950 when we're in the fields. Shes a professional photographer and I get some nice pics....by chance....you can't beat a good eye and know how to frame a pic ;)

I went through agony deciding on a camera four years ago. The technology became increasingly seductive as the price increased. I almost bought a £600 DSLR, but at the last minute, I realised that I really didn't want to carry it. I bought a Canon SX100 (£120) with a 10X optical zoom. It's still too big to carry around . My next camera will cost about £90, and fit in a pocket. I'll use it more. The photos will still be rubbish, but AUTO is pretty good these days.

I've got a Fuji HS10 that I picked up second hand pretty cheaply on eBay. 30x zoom and it uses a manual zoom ring around the lens (in the same way as an SLR does) instead of "in and out" buttons. A lot cheaper than an SLR, more compact than an SLR with an equivalent zoom (though similar to an SLR with a more normal lens) but a smaller sensor means that you lose much of the ability to blur the background when shooting with a large aperture like you could on an SLR. It takes good enough shots 90% of the time though. A little shutter delay could cause issues if you're after action shots. I believe the later versions (HS20 and 30) are better for this.

Before that I had a fuji S1800 which was a bit smaller and had 18x zoom controlled by buttons. It wasn't bad (though mine seemed to do strange things to reds) but didn't survive being dunked in Loch Lomond in a capsized sailing dinghy (the moral - don't trust dry bags!).

The Olympus sz31 lacks a view finder.
I'm eyeing up the sx50 as I currently have an hs20 and want something with more reach and a comparative dslr lens
is out of my price range.
What sort of price range are you looking at ?

Not really sure yet - probably middle of the market ??? £300 ish

Very few cameras these days will have a viewfinder.

It can be quite tragic.

We bought my elderly MiL a simple point and shoot digital camera for her holiday.

We then spent several days ensuring she knew how to work it (her preference being to wave inthe general direction and press)

When she came back, she had 150 photos of her eye!

She had forgotten about looking at the screen, and used the lens as a viewfinder, pressing the button despite not being able to see anything

I'm guessing this was a Fuji finepix with the flash and lens in the top right corner.
Surprised she didn't get blinded given the camera would have thought it was dark.
My canon ixus 100 IS has a viewfinder but it's too small to be usable.
