Bridge closure in Norwich

The bridge crossing the River Wensum, on Sustrans National Network Route 1: Marriots Way Norwich, on the section between Sweet Briar road, and Hellesdon road is closed for refurbishment and resurfacing for the next 13 weeks.

Temporary sign posts (black writing on a yellow back ground) for cyclists are in place, but are confusing at the point where you have to cross Sweet Briar Road (A140) in Norwich: Heading South into the city, continue into the industrial estate and straight on, another sign will be picked up after approx. 1/4 mile. Heading North out of the city, Marriots way is blocked by temorary steel railings, with directions turning you right and taking you up through the industrial estate.

The route South is via Hellesdon Road, turning right into Hellesdon Hall Road, and vice versa for travelling North

The diversion around the closed area adds about 3/4 of mile to your journey, and crosses a busy main road (A140) at a pedestrian crossing.

Heres is where the closed bridge is:

I've just had confirmation from the responsible NCC engineer that this bridge will now be closed for a further two months (!) until 12th Feb 2010.

The road bridge has been closed for a while, but there's still cycle and pedestrian access.

Howeve, I am unsure whether the (old railway) bridge crossing the river Wensum which is on Marriots way has been reopened or not (it's about 200 metres from the closed road bridge).

I have wanted to get down that way on my bike for the last week or two; to go picking Rosehips and Haws, etc. I'll check it out tomorrow and report back to you all.

Oh, I don't know. I only knew that bridge was shut because it was on the way back from Sheringham! I don't cycle out that way much.

The Bridge croosing the river Wensum on Marriots way is now open again.

The refurbishment is a nice job; but why it took so long to complete is beyond me.

I fished the swims directly up stream of the bridge today, and althogh it's only been reopened since Friday already there had been junk tossed from the bridge .... I managed to haul out a complete kiddies 20 inch diametre wheel, full sus, Apollo BSO.
