My Mrs is a Kiwi, but has recently gained dual citizenship; this doesn’t lead to many issues except when England play NZ (at cricket normally ok, rugby not so good).

We have tickets to the All Blacks game next month – and I was wondering if anyone knows whether there is a legal requirement for either of the nationalities to take primacy when in the relevant country – i.e. British citizenship takes precedence in Britain and NZ citizenship in NZ.

I am aware of the master nationality rule – just wondered if it went any further?

(Before you point it out I know being British doesn’t mean being English!!!!)

If anyone knows it would help me stem the flow as the in laws arrive soon and are staying with us for a month!

I'm not sure if it would help, much less answer your question, but I think the best solution would be if you left her at home and took me instead.

As far as I can tell dual nationality seems to be of most use when booking plane tickets... our neighbours always check the price as NZ and UK nationals before they book.

i am personally of the opinion that if you choose to live in a country full-time (i.e. emigrate, not on working holiday or short-term work visa etc) you should support that country in it's sporting events, not the country you originate from.

however, dual nationality does lead to a dilemma but i think she's justified in supporting the all blacks. they are, after all, a much better team! this from an england supporter by the way!

Why? Would you? If I emigrated to NZ, I would still support England. And I would think the less of a Kiwi who moved here and abandoned their allegiance to NZ.

But is teh principle of primacy enforecable in law?

because i think if you choose to live somewhere and reap the benefits you should embrace your new home. otherwise you become a typical Brit ex-pat abroad and we know what a great reputation they have!

and yes, I would and I did. i came here from Zimbabwe 17 years ago and support england in footbal, cricket and rugby.

Well my old man came here from NZ in '54, and he would rather have stuck needles in his eyes than support anyone apart from the All Blacks. Good for him, I reckon!
