Brixton Road/Atlantic Road: Sand?

Did anyone else have a hairy moment with the masses of sand dumped at the end of Atlantic Road in Brixton?

I turned off of Brixton Road only to find myself skidding all over the place! I lost the back early one but somehow managed to recover it, not without first flailing about like a fish out of water.

Yes, I cycled past there on my way home, it had been moved around the corner on to brixton road when I got there, a guy next to me had trouble starting off at the traffic lights.

It was really gravel sand rather than sand for mopping up spillage. I didn't see any reason for it but it looked like too much to be by accident. Was still visible on the other side of the road this morning, rain might have cleared it a bit though.
