Broccoli....what is it good for...?

Broccoli. It's pretty nasty and bitter, isn't it?

Broccoli is a well-described goitrogen. Goitrogens are chemicals that suppress the function of the thyroid gland by interfering with iodine uptake, a key mineral needed to make thyroid hormone. This blocking of iodine uptake causes the thyroid gland to enlarge; a goitre is the end result.

Broccoli is loaded with goitrogens, particularly one group called thiocyanates. The consequence of eating these thiocyanates is the potential to develop the very serious condition of hypothyroidism. What is hypothyroidism? Well, do you or have you ever experienced any of these symptoms?
  • Fatigue and low energy levels
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Depression
  • Slow heart rate
  • Intolerance to cold temperatures
  • Fatigued and aching muscles
  • Dry, coarse skin
  • Puffy face
  • Hair loss
  • Constipation
  • Problems with concentration
If you said yes to any of these, then you’re a candidate for being hypothyroid and broccoli is a prime candidate for causing this.

Lovely stuff, and just about the only veg that my children will happily eat.

Speaking as someone with some dodgy thyroid characteristics, it sounds far fetched to call brocolli the "prime candidate" for hypothyroidism, but I suppose I'll google it.

Setting the controls for the heart of the sun.
Tolerable in small quantities as a courtesy to my wife having cooked it. My daughter's rabbits like it too.
Apart from that, in the vegetable compost table of foodstuffs, it would probably rank just above sprouts which would be at the bottom of the table.

Sweat a small onion in butter, add chopped broccoli including the sliced stalk. Bearly cover with stock and simmer until done. Chuck in a little crumbled Stilton to melt then blend the whole thing until smooth and adjust the seasoning.

The second best soup ever.
