I had a 1980s Raleigh Criterium go in the same place as @BrumJim had on his. Mine was in Bury on a night ride, which made for an interesting journey home. The frame is still in the loft, but considering I only paid £60 for it it's not worth repairing really.IIRC it has also happened to @mcshroom but on a night ride.I think the frame went to the cycle path in the sky.
I've also broken the dropout end of a similar Reynolds 501 frame which was slightly older. I decided to stick to newer stuff after that
