Sucked it up in the end as I ran out of time to tinker, 17.2 miles in granny ring, 1,584ft at 15.5mph.

Job for the weekend!

I think years ago I used a stone between the frame and mech to get me home when my cable snapped , cant remember how well it worked but recall doing it .
I used a stone jammed into the mech parallelogram a couple of months ago when the cable outer split. I had ride a half mile or so on the granny to reach a suitably supply of pebbles, but other than that it worked well.

The limit screw often isn't long enough push the mech far enough over, unless you had the foresight to fit a longer one beforehand.
