Bull bars onto old MTB stem?

So I decided to start doing up my commuter bike, which is based around an old Raleigh mountain bike circa 1994. I'm planning to put some bull bars on it and have begun buying a few bits in preparation but something struck me today that might be rather fundamental to the idea - the stem is one these:

And the simple question is, am I going to be able to thread the bull bars through it? There's a little give in the clamp mechanism, but not a whole lot and I'm not sure the bend in the bars will go through. I don't want to get to buying them and realise they don't fit and I'll have to go out and rethink my whole stem system too.

Incidentally, do they still make/sell these types anymore? A look around seems to suggest they only use the type to fit threadless headsets now, with the completely removable clamp system - like this:

I bought a stem made by BBB, which is the old style quill jobbie but with a removeable clamp.

That one is adjustable but I would guess others are available - just make sure you get the right size to insert into the headset (length and diameter) and the right clamp size and stem length etc etc

Thanks for the reply rh100. Are you saying then that I'm not going to be able to put bull bars through my current stem?

Really couldn't say to be honest, my only real experiance was changing the drop bars on my galaxy to trekking bars - like these: http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/bbb-butterfly-trekking-item56511.html although I got mine off ebay.

The centre of the bars (where it is clamped) has a slightly wider diameter than the rest of the bar, so wether this means the rest of it would thread through any easier I'm not sure. Someone else may be able to advise.
