You'd have to be very sure of yourself. A burglar is likely to be used to physical confrontation.
Not true.

"Burglars" are in a huge amount of cases drug users and they want to be in and out as quickly as possible as the clock is ticking for them, they have to steal the goods, find a place to sell them and then go and buy some drugs before they start going into withdrawal.

If in doubt they tend to run away so they can move onto another empty property. Unless you really are flashing the wealth about by having a certain postcode and chelsea tractor on the drive no organised gang is going to boot your door in the middle of night and take your car keys.

Since arriving in Naples, we have disturbed two very amateur attempts. The first was earlyish - about 5am and I woke to hear the electric gates to our street being opened, to lots of noise. I looked out and a couple of very burly men were crow bar opening the gates. I ran downstairs to confront them, but apparently the sight of my naked wife at the window a few moments after me, was enough to make them run off. The main gate was off the rails, and took a few of us some time to get it back to working order.

The second occasion was in the summer. My wife could not sleep and was sitting on the balcony off the bedroom, reading. She noticed some men climbing the neighbours wall. A shout and a wave were enough to get them running.

We have been quite lucky as many of my colleagues have been burgled or had a car broken into.

The OP was assaulted by the burglar he disturbed...

He was punched, once, by a guy who did it stop himself being chased or followed.

Hardly the beating of his life or a stabbing.

As I said - they want to get out, they will rarely fight for stuff.
And the OP was lucky it was just one punch, for as he pointed out, he was no physical match for the burglar. Which was the point I made to start with.

I would be very careful about getting into fisticuffs with an intruder. You could end up on an assault charge. Might be better to act tough to frighten them off without your goods, or as mentioned call the police and wait outside.

I think you have 2 realistic choices. Get them to leave ASAP or kill them and hide the body. If you only hurt them and they get away then you and your family are at risk of repercussions and you'll spend your life looking over your shoulder.

You never know that until you test it.

Really sorry to hear this. You must feel awful in the house after this thing invaded your private sanctum? I'll touch wood and say so far so good, and unlike others, I have absolutely no idea whatsoever how I would react in a similar situation ... no idea at all.

Hope you can put it behind you and move forward.

I seem to remember a guy got off scot free with killing a burglar, something to do with fear and survive mode we go into when threatened. If memory serves he stabbed him.

We are OK in Manchester land with this - two cases where Mr Robber got it.... big style.

When I was a kid I was always forgetting or losing my house keys, no bother as the kitchen window round the back had two panes of louvre windows at the top which I'd learnt could be slid out by bending the plastic leaving a big enough gap for an 11 year old to squeeze through.

Got home one day having lost or forgotten my keys and no parents cars there so went round the back and went to do my usual entry for these occasions. I slid the glass panes out and climbed up, got halfway in and was hanging by my waist when I noticed the front door was open - Oh NOO I thought my Mum was home (she would have killed me breaking in like that) so jumped back out and quickly slid the glass back into place walked back round the front hoping she hadn't seen me ready to pretend I had just got home. Only when I got there there were no cars so walked into the house and found our portable TV in one of our suitcases in the front hall! I'd only disturbed a burglar in the process of robbing our house - by breaking in!

Good job I didn't have a key that day as I wouldn't have stood much chance against the guy - neighbours a few doors up had said that he had knocked on their door looking for 'John' and he was a big chap!

He did leave a lovely pair of sunglasses behind that I wore all that summer (had to clean a load of silver dust off that the SOCO had left behind)

I wonder what he thought when he realised someone else was breaking in to a house he had already broken into... ^_^
