Is it just me or do buses seem to pass you closely when they actually give you the same amount of distance as cars do (acceptable space)? It always gives me a fright when they pass me even though I can see them coming.

I think you're right. The taller, the longer, the faster, or the louder the vehicle, the more close it seems to be, even if it's as much space as other vehicles give you.

I have Arriva buses near me

+1 - aye, but here in Leeds (- that I've seen!), they've been outstanding; the only "problem" I've ever had is my embarrassment at the degree of courtesy they've shown me! Them, Transdev and Coastliner.

over the years I have noticed that bus drivers have got much better when around cyclists.
I've noticed the opposite in London. The majority of bus drivers used to be both safe and courteous, but over the last few years the driving standard seems to have gone down dramatically.

Only yesterday I came to a halt at a red light and had a bus come past to run the light when it had been red for about a second. A second bus then went through the red light directly behind it! I initially thought I must have missed a filter light or something, but nope.
