Am I allowed to say boody in the title?

Anyhoo. Being the cruel wicked step mother that I am I have just forced my lovely boyfriend, son and step son to go on a car free camping holiday to Robin Hoods Bay.

We got the train to Scarborough and then bus to RHB. OH says I went visibly pale when bus driver told me the price of the fare from Scarborough to RHB for 2 adults and 2 children - £13!!!! This was for a day saver family ticket, and the driver proudly told me I could go all the way to newcastle with it. Brilliant, except I only wanted to go 30 minutes up the coast to RHB.
The single fare for an adult was £4.90, for 30 minutes on the bus!! Is this the most expensive bus fare in Britain?

We had planned to do quite alot of roving up and down the coast, but hadn't planned on the bus fares being so expensive, so we didn't bother. We had a nice walk to Whitby from RHB one day, The bus fare back was £11.40, so we opted for a taxi at £10.20!

And people wonder why the public at large are so attatched to their cars.

How much does it cost for a 30 minute ride where you live?

£13 for 4 people for an hour return trip? Excellent value, don't know what you're on about.

it's probably cost £13 to get 2 adults and 2 kids from Lancaster to Morecambe... the cost of bus travel round here is probably why i cycle so much. The only places i found bus fares reasonable is in bigger places such as Leeds and Manchester.

I was astounded - I rarely catch the bus, I sometimes get it to the city centre about 20/25 minutes by bus costs me £1.80 and child fare is 70p so I was expecting the fare to be comparable. The fare to Sheffield station from home had cost £5 for the four of us.
I think I actually went into a littl bit of shock when the driver told us the price!

£1.60 into town for me, less than 3 miles one way. If I'm not on my own on the bike its cheaper to pay the parking and go in the car. I've seen people waiting at a bus stop get into a taxi - it's cheaper.
Sustainable transport. My arse.

My 'local' bus route cost me £6.60 return when I used it earlier in the year. That is for less than 5 miles from my closest village to the local town, straight down the A556 - no diversions through housing estates etc... took less than 15 mins, but it takes me 15 mins to walk to the closest bus stop and I can cycle the entire thing in less than 30 mins using backroads at just over 6.5 miles each way... guess which I do?

£1.35 for 7 minute trip into town for me (7 minutes is according to the timetable...)

Bus ticketing is odd - they take your eyes out for the odd single here and there, but the passes can actually be good value - it's about £11 for a weekly pass in Sunderland, or for £9.30 I can get a day ticket (an 'Explorer') that allows me to go up to Berwick, down to Scarborough or over to Carlisle and back. I guess they want to reward loyalty, but they must lose lots of occasional trips as a result of the high prices for singles.

Hainford to Aylsham (6.6 miles or 14 minutes) £4.50 return each. We did the route on the bus once and from then on went supermarket shopping by bike and just did a big shop over 2 days.
