If a bus lane doesn't have a sign saying that it can also be used by taxis and bikes, does this mean it's illegal for us to use it?

Newly discovered rabid anti-cyclist colleague at work was whining at me this morning because 'you cyclists shouldn't be using the bus lanes' (yet when we're not in them, we apparently deserve everything we get (close passes, side-swipes and assaults) because there's no way anyone should let any cyclist dictate the speed of the traffic which gets stuck behind them). Similar punishment should be meted out to any cyclist on the road when there's a perfectly good off-road cycle lane alongside.
To think I've got on with this person for the last 11 years and only now does this other side show! I thought she was on a wind-up at first, but it slowly became apparent that she wasn't...

Unless there is a sign saying no cycling, bus lanes should be regarded as large cycle lanes and used accordingly...

Suggest to colleague that she might want to try reading the Highway Code before taking her driving test, as she evidently doesn't have a driving licence

What if some with-flow lanes have bike pictures on the signs and some don't? Do we need to challenge it?

I can't think of an example ATM, but I've seen them locally.

if you can get pics that would help. its silly things like this that get cases thrown out on technicalities.

thats why we have a national system of signs. pre 1963 warboys report signage was atrocious.

Swindon is generally regarded as the Ahole of Wiltshire as it ruins all the crime statistics and is like most towns full of mobile phone shops, nail salons and generic shops.

I grew up in Swindon. I went back over Christmasand it's fair to say that Swindon is essentially the base for every retail outlet possible. It's a town comprised entirely of suburban neighbourhoods (even though that sounds illogical). It's main problem is that it's bereft of any culture at all and the resulting space in one's life is subjected to an assault from outlet shops and out-of-town supermarkets. That being said, it's good to have so many shops in easy reach.

There ends this tangent.

So basically it's like an american town?

In "soul" it is quite like that, yeah. Swindon is a good place to live if you're in a white-collar job (because there are lots about) and you're looking for somewhere relatively safe where you can get a nice home. I can't knock it in that regard. However, it can be tremendously stifling when you're a teenager...

Pretty sure all bus lanes in Edinburgh (that I know of) can be used by cyclists. Your colleague sounds like she has a few issues.

There's still an argument going on because of poor signage - 1st sign says 'Buses, Taxis & Cycles', then about 3 meters along is another sign with only a bus on it. Typical signage cock-up by CEC, but she believes that means we're not allowed in the lane (despite there being another 'Buses, Taxis & Cycles' sign a little further on again in the same bus lane).

I'd write to the council but frankly I can't be bothered and I've stopped listening to her when she starts a cycling conversation anyway!
