Bus Moan (and why the bike is so good)

I really did pootle - an average of 9.1mph on the way in - but it was all about just getting there and back today.

Sounds about par speed for an urban journey to me

To get to my office for 8:30am I have to catch the 7:10am from the stop near my house. I have 9 minutes to make the second bus. At the other end I have 13 minutes to get to my office. If one or other of the buses is late I could be screwed.

It takes me 25 minutes to cycle. I leave at 7:45am and have plenty of time to make tea and get changed. No brainer.

Coming home, if everything goes well, I would get home just after 6pm. If the first bus back is too late or I miss it I get home after 6:30pm.

Cycling gets me home at just after 5:30pm. No brainer again.

Using buses is too stressful.

Same here, bus takes me 45 minutes minimum (often longer, it's a very unreliable service) cycling in takes 30 minutes. Cycling home takes 40 minutes ( longer cos of the massive hill).
Costs £3.90 by bus, which is the price of the day ticket.

That is the reason why I started cycling at "granny age" (no previous cycling efforts), my commute of 5 miles takes 90 minutes with public transport, early/late shifts would be a taxi, bike 30 minutes max, popping into a shop won't make you late either

Surely a 5 hour trip would take you 5 hours

I don't agree, there have been a couple of times when I've realised that my road awareness is well below oar and that I'm making serious mistakes, occasionally you do have to accept that it's worth giving the bike a miss.

Totes agree.( sorry I came over all yoof then).

Some days you just need to leave the bike behind, for any number of reasons . I find this helps make riding a little more special and not just a utilitarian daily grind

On riding back home after an errand I met an acquaintance, she asked if I'd been anywhere nice.
After explaining where I'd been, she said:
"Ohh, you don't take the bus anymore, then? You just go by bike?"

I've never tried walking the 5 miles to work, guess it would take upwards of 75-90 minutes because I don't walk very fast. Though I should really try it, just to say I've done it.

My commute was 13.4 miles today though, but that was only because I could, no other reason! Weather was toooooooooo nice.

Was a programme on telly recently about congestion outside schools. One indignant woman was complaining that she had no choice but to drive as it was a 20 minute walk.
