so today on the commute, i was riding in a secondary maybe a strong one but not primary an my local A road (A28 if anyone knows it) and was forced off the road buy a big double decker bus and then almost squished as the driver also almost squished cars oncoming on the other side

what would you have done?
i got rather angry and shouted a load of words that mustn't be repeated which helped my self slightly at the time but i have now written a detailed email to the bus company and will see what they say next week, could post email up here if you like?

i think i may now invest in a vid camera, where is it best mounted on the bars or on the forks or on my lid?

Don't expect too much from the company.

I've complained about a couple of drivers - at most, I think, I've had an apology and a leaflet. When I was knocked off, and reported the incident to the Police, follow up took so long that the CCTV was "lost".

On the video camera, I don't use one, but I imagine the advantage of head mounting is that it will show/prove that you made observations. (One of the drivers I had cause to complain about justified his actions on the basis that I'd not checked behind me before moving - I had, and found my view to be full of his f*cking bus, but that's another story).

Keep the email short - you have to tell the tale, but no one will read hundreds of words.

No mud-slinging, illustrate the driver's actions by your own "I had to swerve/brake sharply to avoid being run over", "despite shouting/ringing my bell/slapping the bus the driver was oblivious to my presence".

Isn't the bus company responsible for setting the sometimes impossibly tight time-tables that make some bus drivers drive like this in the first place!

Good luck with the email in any case. Weasel words in reply, I suspect!

I know the A28, Ed, being as you know quite local to you - I keep off it as much as possible and the last time I was on it (near Bethersden) I was close-passed on a blind bend by a bloke towing a caravan! - but I know sometimes you have to use the A28 to get back onto one of our lovely lanes.

I agree a not-too-long email to the bus service is the right thing - try not to be too hot-headed, maybe run the text past someone else if you think you might verge on the abusive! (PM me if you like, if you haven't got anyone around who can read it for you). A lot of people on here have had good results with this approach and you'll be doing your fellow local riders (including me!) a favour.

In moments of anger i sometime wish i had caltrops to stick under some tyres of motorists who park in places they should not , like fully able people in disabled bays and those who use the child only parking when they have no kids with them .
