We're encouraged to take a day or two out of the office each year as 'community days' and I like to do something relating to my job or cycling.

This year, I was able to help Nige out with his LEJOG effort on a single speed butcher's bike from 1945. Needless to say, he's a bit mad as the bike weighs a tonne and has a ratio that's far from ideal for the task. I set out from Gosforth and rode with them up to Amble - a relatively flat coastal route at an average of 10mph. I spent most of my time out on the front helping to shield Nige from the wind which he seemed grateful for.

Their ultimate destination for the day was Eyemouth, just outside Berwick Upon Tweed. I was tempted to go all the way but hadn't really sorted transport back and 140 miles in a day is a bit beyond my abilities just now.

You can find out more at http://www.butchersbikechallenge.org.uk/ and I'm sure he'd appreciate a few quid for his efforts if you've any spare.

Here we all are just outside Morpeth (which has a challenging climb, given his equipment, on the other side that I'd forgotten about...)
