Im very prone to sciatica which can be absolute agony. Have tried memory foam and the like which doesnt help one bit so now sleep on a thin camping mattress over a firm base. This keeps my spine where its meant to be ^_^ I wince when an elderly person with back problems buys a super soft mattress as the discs will surely slip. But each to their own of course whatever works for you.

This is one of those queries where you will get dozens of different recommendations I think.

I think in the first instance you should go and see a good retailer like And So To Bed (Not Dreams or the big chains, who are box-shifters) who are near you in Harrogate: https://www.andsotobed.co.uk/store/17-harrogate
Whose cheapest Vi-spring is £1400 for a King size.... (and not much less than that for other brands) so only double @Julia9054 preferred budget

Indeed, the base is as important as the mattress if not more so. I was told this by the orthopaedic surgeon who operated on my back over 20 years ago :okay: Good firm divan not some springy wooden slatted job ftw :okay:

And who have a less expensive range too, at around OP's budget, so yes, much less than that by my definition, if not yours.
Not on the website you linked that I can see for Vispring :okay:

OK, this is £900 in Kingsize, never heard of the brand or a hybrid mattress, but might be worth trying (medium support too soft for me)

There's nothing wrong with Dreams etc if you want a wide range of brands to try at a range of prices :okay:

The neck issue is a recent thing - past few months - and as I haven't had any injury, I can only assume it is from how I sleep.
In that case, I'd hang fire for a bit until you try something else. I was having back, shoulder, neck ache all the time in the night and when waking. I bought 2 extra pillows (good firm feather ones). One goes between my thighs and/or I drape mt arm over the other one. This must put less pressure on my joints because it's far better than it was. Also my partner has one of those 4ft long pillows, same effect, more support. Maybe try that first before you fork out for a mattress? It might be that you could get away with one more in your budget if your sleeping position is improved with pillows that can be had for £20

Pillows indeed, but a saggy, lumpy, old mattress as per the OP sounds like it is probably ready for replacement too :okay:

I said ViSpring before a budget was quoted. I haven't mentioned them since, have I? Now it turns out that good bed shops - specialists in beds often have ViSpring as their premium brand. And So To Bed does too, because this is all they do, and you can bet that the lower cost mattress range they stock will also be very good. Of course, the OP could visit, get specialist advice from them, but not purchase - it's only a very few miles down the road, and a bed/mattress is a hugely important purchase.

Dreams? Please no, that's just plain bad advice. https://www.reviews.co.uk/company-reviews/store/dreams - and any other reviews you wish to read. I made a mistake of buying a superficially comfortable mattress from a similar outfit once. Never again.

Ok

I did suggest a local place too ;)

My brother had to return a JLP mattress which was faulty (no issues but he is a partner so easy to sort  )

A 7 year warranty is on the shorter side?

I think it was a Travel Lodge we stayed in once that told you what the mattress was and how to buy it.

Must admit it was a lovely nights sleep.

Might be worth the cost of the room to test it out if they still do that.

Have a look on the Which website they did a mattress review fairly recently. We ended up with the Eve Premium , springs and memory foam. It is very supportive as I am 2m tall weighing about 100kg next to my small but perfectly formed Celtic wife with no problems. The reviews have a long list at various prices.
