Buying glasses online - worth it?

Slightly OT but I get contact lenses online. A saving to be had from having the exact same thing posted to you, as opposed to having to take the time to pick them up - though the optician will post them out too if asked...

Asda do 2 so-called designers pairs for a smidgen over 100 squids. Tough to beat methinks.
Get my contacts from Costco at around about the same price as on-line

I tried this myself some years ago, and at the time thought I was making a saving. However, I was reminded that the opticians (specsavers) give you free lens checks every 6 months for using direct debit on lensmail, so had I bought online I'd have had to pay for lens checks, which bumps the cost up to near enough the same as buying online. That was also based on buying the cheapest solution possible (ASDA at the time).

I would urge anyone to get lenses and the subsequent checks done in an actual shop. I once had an ulcer on my eyeball which was excruciating, but also reminded me that some problems can be asymptomatic. I wouldn't risk something being missed for the sake of a £5 a month saving.
