The aisles of a certain more upmarket supermarket I used to frequent would be full of characters circling slowly round the store with their near-empty trolleys at about 7.45pm, coming back over and over again to the bakery shelves to see if the wholemeal rolls had been reduced yet to 5p and the stone ground ciabattas to 19p.

I used to go down to my local corner shop at around 10 pm to buy beer. They had one of those in-store bakery franchises where everything has to be sold the day that it is baked. They quite often used to GIVE me bread because 5 minutes later they would have been binning it.

More recently I saw staff at my local Lidl clearing shelves of in-store baked goods just before closing time. I asked whether they were going to throw it away but they said that it would be collected and taken to a local food bank.

Yeah, I've heard before that LIDL in Tod have been very supportive of the work of the Food Bank. Not sure if it is possible for the bank to give away all of the bread before it spoils though, that must be quite a challenge.

So everybody (except @User482) goes to the supermarket to get bargains? I won't say no to a marked down product at a supermarket, but nothing there compares to market sellers. If I walk past a street market veggie stall, I will fill a bag with the "every bowl £1" bargains they are getting rid of. These are so much cheaper and better than what's at the supermarket, with less waste too. Maybe lash out and get something "full price" with the money I've saved.

I was in Tesco some time back; I only wanted a brown sliced loaf.

Lo and behold! Wasn't there one on the yellow ticket shelf! 20p I think... Happy days.

I went to take it when the woman standing by growled "Oi! I'm waiting for that"

"Waiting for it? What do you mean?"

"If I leave it there another 15 minutes it will be going down again".

I wasn't really after the bread and cakes for myself for myself - I was just concerned that they might be throwing away perfectly good food!

I love bread but have to steer clear of it most of the time because I could easily eat a whole (small) loaf and a pack of cheese in one sitting, together with half a jar of olives! Beer, bread and cheese were how I got fat years ago. I gave up all 3, but have relaxed a bit now - still no beer, but I buy bread once every couple of weeks, and about a pack of cheese a week.

Me too. I hate the supermarket environment, so avoid at all costs. I really can't remember last time I did a supermarket shop. Like User482, we buy all our fruit and veg in a local shop. We used to have a great butcher too but they shut a few years back.
