I'm getting a £400 voucher for a road bike and some accessories from Halfords but I have just noticed you can get the Carrera Vanquish for £429 if you reserve online.

The bods at Halfords tell me I can't even get above the £400 mark if I leave a £29 deposit.

Bloody red tape

I just needed to vent.

That's a shame. The R2W scheme where I work allows you to add your own cash on top of the voucher (max £1000 voucher). I didn't go for it as I plan a career change in the next year or so.

yeh we can add extra funds to our scheme too.. i recently got the 1k voucher and added another 740 to it to get the bike i wanted... not that it'll ever be used to go work on mind.. no way leavin it in the bike shed at work..

I think they may have tightened the rules as you can't own half a bike. You employer must own it all.

oh that's not good. I've just started my second C2W scheme for a hydrid commuter. Plan was to get a new roadie next year in the £1500 range by putting half on voucher and making the rest up myself. Seems that might not be possible.

Mind you, bloke in my LBS seems to think the whole scheme might be scrapped in the current government spending cuts at some point which would be a damn shame.

I'm just curious on this so don't really know for sure, but if you topped with cash at your LBS, how would C2Work even know you've done this (after the voucher has been issued)?

A LBS probably wouldn't care.  A large retailer/chain will have tighter procedures and will be more likely to stick to the rules.  Halfords don't need to worry if they sell one less bike, your one man shop does.

One thing both LBSs told me when i bought both C2W bikes is you must put the bike you're buying on the voucher. I'm sure the LBS would be ok putting deposit paid of say £750 on the voucher, outstanding voucher amount £750, but it's whether the scheme administrators woud accept it i guess. Time will tell. I'm planning on doing it until next summer.

Won't they knock the price down to £400 for you? You could say that you'll also buy £X worth of accessories, make it worth their while.

Good idea! Go into a store, ask to speak to a manager, explain the situation, and ask them to sell you it for £400 with the voucher if you then buy helmet, lights, lock, jacket etc etc with your own cash there and then. Unless there is an un-workroundable administrative reason why they can't to do with the scheme, I see no reason why they wouldn't do that.

Try another Halfords, the same happened to me. The biggest one in the area would not allow a "top up" of any amount and got quite rude when I asked about it. Went to the smaller one closest to me and just asked straight out what they thought about it and they said fine.

I've tried the two local to me. and they say they can't "discount" the bike as I already asked
