I have been approved for my voucher and now I have 3 very good bikes and almost 1 SS bike I'm looking for the winter hack.

I got rid of my cube for a road bike, mtb's are just not my thing.

So I was thinking maybe a cross or touring bike for winter, it will need to be able to take wide ish studded tyres and disk brakes would be nice
And I'd like it to be unassuming so I can take it to the shops
My voucher is for £900

Thoughts ?

I was in Evans the other day looking at the Tricross, it's my next bike/winter commuter if I can find the funds (no C2W here)
I agree on the wide tyre clearance for the studded Schwalbes, only the lack of disc brakes making me only 90% sure it's what I'll eventually go for.

Agreed re disks - EC's have a no e disk cross, but the canal has 9 locks and the only good thing about the mtb was those disks ( only because it's not my style )

Hence me asking re the revolution tourer

No £900 bike of mine would be left outside a shop without a rotweiller chained up to it

Another bike Gaz? They'll be 'chatting' again ;)

RE Country touring bike: The more expensive Country Explorer has front and rear disk brakes and a Steel frame, compare that to the alu frame and canti brakes on the cheaper Country Traveller (which I have

). Only £674. I think that adding wider, studded tyres wouldn't be out of the question, the mudguards on mine look to have the clearance.

EBC Country Explorer

That's the one that caught my eye

I am afraid if you're referring ting to the Explorer model I wouldn't know as I only have the lower-specced Traveller. My apologies if my post was unclear.

Otherwise I really like my tourer for it's main role as a commuter and workhorse. It has a nice comfortable riding position thanks to it's compact frame, I am 5' 7" and I have the medium 49cm model, I was advised by EBC to get the 49 as I was on the border between that and the next size down. I find the components are good and dependable. The canti brakes stop me rather well even with a full load in the panniers. The one thing I don't like that much is the rear rack, it's design fouls the panniers I bought (EBC waterproof ones, £70); the only way to get them to fit is to have them hanging almost off the back of the rack, a better design for the position of the dog leg and fixing bolts for the bottom stays would negate this problem.

I can only imagine that the better brakes, stiff steel frame and the step up in component level would make it an even better buy.
