You could tell me if their purposes are evenly matched.

Only you could decide which was 'better', as it's only your decision that counts if you're going to buy one!

Just looking at the two (primarily the gap between the rear wheel and the seatpost) it looks like the CAAD is the 'racier' of the two, and almost certainly won't take mudguards.

I think you will have to go to the Defy 1 to get Aluxx SL aluminium . The 2 is fluidform but still claims to be better than 6061 series alu ( claimed by Giant )
No idea about mudguards .

I have not ridden the Defy so cannot comment but i do own a Caad8,so my choice would be the Cannondale. But that's not a conclusive answer for you is it.

Neither, until you go ride them.

You might find one just "is better" when you sit on them / ride them.

Me, i would have the Dale, but only because i find them a very good fit for me.

As pretty much all of the above.

It is always very subjective the "which is best" thing & it is very hard to recommend something other than the one I/someone else would buy themselves.

Having never ridden an Emmerdale for instance it would be hard for me to say what is good/great or bad about them & so I would suggest the Giant which I have owned & a Cube Peloton which I would like to own soon.

As others suggest, the only really important opinion is your own & so a test ride of both is best.

In the end, you will buy the one that's best for you.

Ok thank you for the opinions, that is what I was looking for. I have ridden both and I would like any more info about the longevity of each bikes' crankset and shifting components. I take it the CAAD 10 has a little more durability for said parts. The brakes, wheels, and steerer dont matter to me.

Without telling us what parts the respective bikes have we can't help.

Albeit, generally speaking most parts wear rate isn't that different, you usually pay more for lightness not durability.

Given that both the Tiagra and 105/FSA gear/crank components could reasonably be expected to last thousands of miles with minimal problems, it probably boils down to Tiagra/Hollowtech vs BB30 bottom bracket bearings - I expect you'll get horror stories and raves for both...
