Calling all keen photographers.

I used to do photography about 25 years ago and would like to start again. I am looking to buy a DSLR and my budget is £400 max. I am looking at the Nikon D3300 and Canon EOS series. What would you recommend? My subject would be mostly landscapes by the way.

Photographers who use Nikon will recommend Nikon, those who use Canon will recommend Canon. Same advice applies as you would get on here if you were asking about different bikes to buy, go to the shop and handle the cameras in your price range. Pay particular attention to the layout of the controls, which feels the best, most comfortable in your hands, and look at the layout of the menus as one style may appeal to you more than the other.
In terms of quality absolutely no difference when comparing like for like in terms of lens etc. When did you last see a photograph and know instinctively that it had been taken on a Nikon or a Canon?

Not much difference - just see what you prefer. My son has a Canon 700D which is in your price range.

The only thing I have left from 25 years ago is my camera bag and a few filters. Sold all the equipment.

A 'what camera' question is a bit like a what bike /saddle / shorts / etc question.

My advise, find out what your friends have and be compatible with them, that way you can borrow lenses.

I have a DSLR (Cannon EOS1200, about £250) which I am very happy with, but if I was buying now I would consider a Compact System Camera because it is so much easier to carry around.

I have gone down that route and the difference in size and weight is remarkable and I now use my camera far more. In terms of quality I feel that I have stepped up a notch through my choice of lens. I frequently print to A3 size.

I've got a Panasonic Lumix FZ38 which was widely reviewed as the best bridge camera around when I bought it and it still produces some amazing quality images now, 7 years after buying it.
So you might want to consider a good quality bridge camera instead of an expensive SLR and all the kit you'll need with one.

But the camera I enjoy using most is my 1980 Zenit EM 35mm film SLR, which I picked up for £30 including two quality lenses. It requires a bit more effort, but its a lot more rewarding.

Yeah usual thing i am Canon so get cheap cropped frame with Canon wide angle...or splash the cash and get FF with pro series wide angle + £1k

Cool particularly if you still develop B&w yourself...ppl dont realise how good this is

Because mirrorless is a piggin nightmare of you are a keen photographer avoid at all costs!
