I need to write up proposals for a couple of projects in Essex and will be working on their development with the county council and other partners/funding bodies. Can't say too much at the moment because I don't want anyone else trying to nick my ideas!

But, I need a bit of help...are there any successful racers/mountain bikers/bmxers from Essex? Or anyone famous in the cycling world?

Ta in advance.

Apart from a couple of ex-racers I know who own shops, i'm not aware of anyone currently. Your best bet would be to contact some of the local shops who are a bit hardcore or clubs such as:-

http://www.southendwheelers.org/ Chris Smith or Graham Pearl may be able to help you on local racers.

Shops, try

http://www.jdcycles.com/

or

http://www.richardsonscycles.co.uk/

They're into road racing and will have contacts and knowledge in that area.

I don't have contact with anyone else or the appropriate knowledge unfortunately.

Bob Downs lives in Basildon and Vin Denson is an Essex man, though they are both long retired now.

I think Bob Downs now works for BC.

Well someone has to live there (being an ex-Essex man myself) It's OK, so long as you like white stilettos - Ford Escorts & fluffy dice

I didn't see an Escort all the time I was there but I did notice quite a few people looking at my Capri when it was parked up in both Maldon and Chelmsford. No fluffy dice though.

My first car was a Lime Green Ford Escort Mk II. Loverly car peppered with rust spots where my Dad hadn't bothered to wash in in the previous five years. Mechanically perfect though as I re-built it.
