Off to Cambridge next week for a couple of days with Mrs T.

We have been thinking of whether to change Mrs T's tourer. Can anyone suggest a cycle shop or two to look around in central Cambridge?

Hi Toffee,

I'm not from Cambridge but went there recently and popped in here whilst I was there.

Apologies as this is the only bike shop in Cambridge that I've been in but hope you manage to find a few to check out.

Surly stockists at the LIGHT BLUE CYCLES .... they have a sale at the moment:

Bicycle Ambulance .... well worth a visit .... Best bike shop in Cambridge IMHO.... super guys who really go out of their way to help and they are very knowledgeable.... some of the guys here do Audax etc and will sort you with a good bike .... this is where I service all my bikes, and have seen guys bring their Pinarellos and Cervellos from far off places such as London to this shop for servicing:

There's Kingsway Cycles who are near the Grafton Centre who have a good range of tourers;

And Richardsons Cycles on Newmarket Road;

Interesting link to Kingsway Cycles. I hadn't paid them much attention until now, largely because they're down a side road where I rarely go, but I do recall them having a lovely old-school workshop crammed with bikes and bits, and they helped me out with a seized-up part on a brake lever once for the princely sum of nothing, so I'm prepared to think highly of them.

Agree about Bicycle Ambulance - good, knowledgeable service and quick turnaround, my repair shop of choice and a great source of mechanical advice.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Only going to be there for 2 days and so we are not going to get round them all.

For the sake of completeness there are also
Primo, on Jesus Lane - road bikes with some quite high-end stuff
Evans, on Chesterton Road - much as Evans everywhere, quite helpful and well-stocked

though these wouldn't be my first port of call if I were interested in tourers

Another that's been forgotten (in all seriousness) is University Cycles on Victoria Bridge.

Colin isn't even old school, he's his own school! The shop is the ultimate in clutter. He has lots of Dutch town bikes, but last time I was in there he did have a Giant road bikes and some tourers. If he likes the look of you he'll probably give it you for a fiver!

Primo is deffo high-end;Colnago and Cervelo although they seem to be pushing Trek a lot these days and they still haven't sorted they're website; can be a bit confusing what they actually stock as well.

Had no problems with the Evans in Cambridge and another thumbs up for Bicycle Ambulance at Park St.

I won't say anymore about CycleKing;guy at work bought an Amacco(I know:rolleyes:) off them and had a few problems with it which they didn't exactly fall over themselves to help with.

Lensfield Road cycles does a good selection of 2nd hand bikes and can find just that obscure part you need to get your favourite back on the road.

I bought my wife an Amacco trike from Cycle King .... friendly chap ....

a week later, the tyre split. I took the tyre back to him and he gave a new one plus a free tube and was going to give another one aswell for free (he thought that one of the back tyres had split). I told him that I only needed one as it was the front.

A month later, I took the trike to Cycle King for it's 1st free service. There were a few minor issues that needed sorting, and they sorted it. So my experience with them so far has been positive

I will however take the trike to Bicycle Ambulance for future services, as they service all my bikes.
