Had a good day today. It was quite odd coming down Madingley hill at 7.30 and seeing zero traffic!

I don't think that Cambridge bothered too much, not like Yorkshire, but all in all it was a thrill to see them come through.

I know that some students & staff were directly told they couldn't do a fair number of things like hanging flags out etc. As the University & related collages own huge amounts of the city it kind of puts a damper on things . As an organisation it seemed to want to do the minimum required to get their wireless antennas everywhere.

We rode out to watch the Tour pass near Shalford, a bit beyond Finchingfield, and then caught the finish in London on a big screen on Saffron Walden common. It was a great day out, and there was a party-like atmosphere all along the route, with people setting up tables and gazebos in front gardens and verges, and events going on in several villages. For just one day everyone in northern Essex loved cyclists, and we bathed in the reflected glory.

Here, the good folk of Great Shelford prepare for the big day at 8.30 in the morning.

Here, the two front runners Barta and Bideau appear, still 4 minutes ahead of the peloton.

And here, the folk of Saffron Walden watch the rainy finish on the big screen.

I skived off for a very long lunch break to watch it at Great Shelford just south of Cambridge. It was brilliant. I loved watching the Gendarmes go by and all the support vehicles as well as the cyclists. And chapeau to the fellow from Cleveland Police who high-fived the crowd as he wobbled past on his motorbike! All in all great atmosphere and great fun.

Nice little peloton of sorts on the way to Cambridge afterwards.

Lots of roads closed in Cambridge, so of course 90% of my colleagues who normally drive in couldn't possibly make it to work today- even though most of them only live a couple of miles away the lazy sods! Still at least I had the office to myself! This is at 3pm...

A great day. I fancy crossing the channel now to follow it over there too.

I must add my vantage point was GREAT got to see the race for about 3-4 min. No useful photographs - all were dark & blurry (no image stabilisation or tripod on a 600mm lens)

As it was just down the road it would have been rude not to have gone but in retrospect I would have been just as happy, or happier, watching on TV. As an event I didn't find it a patch on the 2007 prologue - comparing chalk and cheese I guess.

But let's be honest, if I was to wave a yellow handkerchief on behalf of the college it would have taken at least 600 committee meetings!
