I would look at a Fujifilm FinePix S5700 (or whatever they've replaced it with). I prefer to use film generally but the Fujifilm FinePix S5700 I have is decent camera by normal standards, more compact and easier to use than a proper DSLR, yet a better lens and more control over the photo than any of the compact cameras. Does an excellent job on automatic as well, I have no complaints.

I have an older finepix S5000 series which is like a mini dslr (except, in the true sense of the word it isn't a single lens reflex, it uses a live view sensor) and while it does give full manual settings, including focus, it's hard to use

appature and shutter settings are easy to use, if you know what you're doing / each one does

but, mine is now 5 years old, so the controls might have changed

gives a good picture

I'm not a serious photographer so I've got a SonyCanon Powershot SX120. I mainly use it in Auto mode, but there are lots of settings to fiddle about with if you want to. It costs £105 on Amazon with free delivery, but you might need to spend another £25 on a soft case and an 8GB memory card. It takes AA batteries so I just use the same re-chargeables at my bike lights. I don't know how it stacks up against other cameras, but I think it takes OK pictures with zero effort.

oh dear! I'm surprised that you didn't think that one through. Bigger camera = need for new, bigger handbag. And for those of you who think this little exchange is somehow silly, I can report that the colour of the camera is now the no.1 priority

I'm so grateful for the advice, and, in particular for the link to the John Lewis/Peter Jones price of the camera. Christmas shopping combined with lunch at the brasserie is an irresistible combination. A bottle of Chapel Down awaits us.

I am not in the least surprised. I am now quite accustomed to borrowing a pink camera.

Panasonic TZ8. Bought one in November to replace a slightly cheaper Samsung that I had lost. Just wanted an auto camera that did the job and am very pleased with it. The TZ10 is a little more popular and expensive but not worth the extra for my purposes. They are similar to much more expensive Leicas which Panasonic make for Leica. Quite a large compact but that's fine for me as the small ones are too fiddly.

I've just bought myself a TZ8 as a pressie to myself but it'll be unopened till the 25th, as an old traditionalist. Glad to hear it comes with a recommendation!

p.s. It's black

Now we need some advice on 'fuel'

If it is anything like the Denbies cooking wine then good luck! (There is, however, a nice Beaujolais doing the rounds of JL...forget what it is called now...)

Just to be different I'll suggest another red camera:

http://www.srsmicros...--4GB-Card.html

main reason being that once you've used a DSLR the sheer sloooooooownneeeesss of a compact becomes unbearable. Also much more scope to get creative if she wants. Its very small as a DSLR goes, too...

Pink is also available :-)
