Tha saga continues! On removal and lifting off of the freehub a couple of the springs and pawls displaced and putting them back is not easy! In addition the spindle running through the hub has definite wear marks, I'm unsure if its wise to even try to have a go at the bearings they seem sealed but I'm sure thet're not.

This is going from a saga to a drama by the minute!

Why have you removed the freehub? If it's working fine leave well alone, maybe put a few drops of gear oil into it.

If the axle spindle only has wear marks on the bearing surfaces then that's fine so long as the surfaces aren't pitted. Check the cone nut surfaces as well for pitting. Just clean thoroughly then regrease with a bearing Teflon grease. You will need some cones spanners. Get an engine degreaser to clean the sprockets, but check them first to see if they are too worn making cleaning pointless. You can still get new 8 spd Campag Record and Veloce groupsets on Ebay for about £30 - 40. Maybe it's worth fitting new chain rings as well - TA or the other well known make, Ribble do them at a reasonable price. Definitely fit a new chain. You don't have to use a Campag chain just make sure it is the correct spec. Campag Record chain £££££. Use a Quicklink in the chain as well which is something that Campag don't offer and another reason for using another make of chain eg KMC, SRAM.

How about bottom bracket? Does this turn smoothly and freely? It is probably a sealed cartridge BB. It may be worth just removing it, greasing the threads of the shells, so it doesn't become seized if it hasn't already.

Thanks, however its not that simple. No cones, its a hollow spindle threaded at both ends with two nuts, there's a bearing on the hub (non drive side), another on the drive side of the hub, accessible when the freehub is removed, and another on the freehub outer. The drive side of the hub engages with the freehub assembly and on the back of the freehub there are these pawls and springs. From what I can gather not that common.

Cassette is individual rings and spacers, so hopefully something like a veloce 9 will be OK for a replacement, bottom bracket replaced last year with a veloce unit amd I'm considering new chainrings, at least for the middle and outers. Headset also replaced last year with a record unit so other than this wheel bearing, sprockets, chain, chainring etc its worth saving (I think)

The bearings should be covered by a plastic waterproof seal which should just prise off and hopefully should reveal a ball bearing cage and bearings which can be removed and re-greased.

If I get you right then the hub has a circular ridged affair that the pawls on the freehub go inside of.

You can re-assemble the pawls(tricky I know) and then position the freehub next to the hub and gently tease each pawl into the ridges in the hub.

If that fails then I used to put a very small rubber band around the pawls so as to hold them in. I then threaded some floss through the rubber band. The freehub can then be partly inserted into the hub so that the pawls are held in and the band then withdrawn by pulling it away using the floss. Then push the freehub all the way in.

Hope this helps - or alternatively you can just get a new pair of wheels!

"Hope this helps - or alternatively you can just get a new pair of wheels!"

This does sound more and more like the most sensible option, which was the reason I posted the question about Fulcrum 5's or 7's etc elsewhere.

I'm wondering if all this mucking about with these wheels is actually worth it as I'll no doubt be looking for new wheels sooner rather than later. I'll consider giving the rubber band trick a go and see what happens, however I'm really getting closer to chucking the whole wheel in the skip.

Thanks by the way!
