After many years of annually following parts of the tour we’re looking to go middle aged (camping and kipping in a transit van or rough on the side of Col D'Aubisque don't float her boat any more!) and hire a camper for the duration.

Anything in Belgium and France is, understandably, booked years in advance. In the UK you can go via a brokerage which a) seem very expensive and b) seem to attract some very bad reviews regarding quality of product and support (insurance, breakdown, hidden charges etc.)

Any advice or anybody who wants to rent out a vehicle to a couple of cycling nuts (over forty, respectable(!) and with clean driving licences and own insurance and breakdown cover) it would be great to hear from you....

Holland, hire it from Holland. Don't use a brokerage, there are plenty of hire firms here but it won't be cheap, probably @700 a week.

I'd say it's unlikely someone who doesn't know you well will lend you one. For most people they are a big investment and the thought of lending it to someone who might just forget they can't go under that low bridge would be too much. I know, I've had two of them and never contemplated lending them to anyone.

Following the tour is a great idea. I never did it but saw loads who did. Overnight camping in Supermarche car parks in start and finish towns is a pretty common sight during the tour.
