I think they're what we call cornflies and I remember the whitewash walls of the farmhouse turning black with them in 1976

Yep, thunder bugs or thrips....get bloody everywhere, even inside photo frames etc. Real nuisance!

They are pollen beetles, @User9609. They usually hang out in rape fields hence the space lemon thing.

Pollen beetles are a serious pest of oil seed rape. Scientists are currently experimenting with producing varieties with red flowers which, it appears, the pollen beetles are not attracted to. Look out for fields of red instead of bright yellow flowers in the future
