Can anyone recomend me a new Hoover??

As others have said, don't buy a Dyson. The last time ours was repaired my wife expressed her surprise at its unreliability to our local (independent) hoover man. "Blokes like me love Dyson!" he grinned. "They're rubbish. Dyson is basically my livelihood."

unless you're prepared to spend as much time cleaning the vacuum as you do cleaning the carpets, then the suction is rubbish.

The design on the Dyson hoovers is far too intricate, there are too many bends, pipes, valves and seals to block up and go wrong.

Vax's are pretty good too. Like the Henry hoovers they're built to be up to industrial use.

I'm liking the opinions of henry

my fiancee's grandmother gave us £90 to get a vacumm cleaner and so my fiancee ordered a hetty (pink henry)

do they cope with dust? just thinking it might be attached to power sanders etc at some stage

They are not bad for attaching to sanders and the like but no hoover will stop all the dust.

My Miele has just died after 5 years; it was Which magazine's top recommendation at the time and I am not impressed. Previously I had an Electrolux that lasted 22 years.

I have just bought a Dyson roller ball type and it is great on carpet and hard floors but useless for stairs. Hopefully it is more reliable than the Miele.

i know you can't stop all the dust, just wanted to know if it'll kill it or not

Our chimney sweep uses a Henry - that must say something for its ability to cope with fine dust!

I'd refer you to an old thread of mine titled, "Dysons suck, or rather they don't" but it's lost in the mists of time.

The majority advice to me then was to go for a Henry.

I have got through three of those and am just ordering a spare for the latest: Henry IV Part 1.

Remember that you get different versions of Henry, although the basic one will do most things. They're designed for industrial use so you get a stack of attachments for them too, check those out.

I have also got a French model that has a built-in air conditioner and makes a nice drink after finishing the chores - it's called a "Tea Airy Henri" But it doesn't make a Miele of it.

We've had Dysons for years...and although the DC07 (IIRC) with the rocket body was crud, we've had no major problems with them in general. They are a bit fragile looking..perhaps my missus is particually careful. She hoovers once or twice every day, so they've certainly done the work.

Henrys, we have them at work, and they're a fine product...but...as the onsite engineer, i replaced 2 in the last year, repaired the winding mechanism several times on different ones, replaced switches once or twice and threw a not so old one away because the motor went It wasnt much dearer to replace the whole thing as buy a motor.

They're good, but maybe not as good as they used to be.
