Can anyone recommend a good antivirus for Apple?

I don't have a recommendation, however I can tell you to avoid 'McAfee Security for Mac'. We've had a lot of problems with this spawning 100s of scanning processes if the current date gets mangled for some reason. We've also had problems with it causing the machine to run VERY slowly with memory hungry tasks.

i brought Virus Scan from McAfee 18 months ago, it only cost £8 to renew for the year i don't think that it has ever found anything on my mac in all that time. Whether it's any good i couldn't say, it doesn't seem to slow the machine up.

I hope that it continues to work for you! I'm our departments Mac support specialist & it's my experience is it's okay when it works but when it breaks you're basically looking at uninstalling it, reinstall it & hopefully in the mean time you've given sacrifices to the right gods.

Hi , I tend to go with Intego antivirus products. Used them for years and never had a problem with slowdown and support is great. Downside is it can be a little expensive. The other device I like is the yoggie , a simple usb device you can plug in and forget, as an external device doesn't swallow system resources. You could also go brave and use nothing ! I only use as I have used my mac book on client sites so have to use an AV for client perception. Work however have bought my a HP laptop now ... which is nice :-(

I've just upgraded to iMac & am thinking about it although all the Mac people say I don't need one. What is a Yoggie? I used to have Intego on my laptop.

If you are sensible in your habits then no, you will probably never have cause to use one. I never have. That said, nobody's perfect, and despite the lack of actual *viruses* you're still probably safer with than without. Belt and braces, and all that.

OS X as a platform is very safe. Security, however, is a different matter.

Hey

I used to work for Apple tech support and must say that in 3 years I never received a single virus related problem. As previously mentioned above intego is the only package I could recommend

Thanks folks, just thinking belt and braces really. One of the reasons we chose a mac was the lack of virii.
Write 100 times: 'The plural of virus is viruses'. ;)
