I should have mentioned that I'm looking for a foil shaver rather than rotary.

I've not yet managed to find a single shaver still available in the UK that works directly from mains.

I've got a Braun something-or-other (foil), that unfortunately died recently. It has a little plug socket thingy in the base that fitted into the charging station. But it also came with a cable too so you could charge it without using the fancy charging station thing. So I had a shaver, and a cable that could plug into the mains. Question is would the shaver work while plugged in? I don't know because the thing doesn't work any more.

What I'm saying is there may be battery shavers that will work when plugged into the mains, as you require, but don't advertise the fact because people only ever plug them in to charge them, not use them.

If only my Braun was still alive I would be able to check the fact. But it isn't.

don't think dual corded/battery operation has been the norm for quite a while now

i suspect this is to protect the stupid, who might try shaving with it plugged in while having a bath/shower/whatever

clearly the sensible solution would've been to maintain convenience for the sensible, whilst leaving others to provide examples of evolution in action

The battery on my very old Philips shaver is pretty useless now. It takes about 4 times as long to charge as it did when it was new, and that charge only lasts about a quarter as long. I have therefore started using it when plugged in (it works well like that). The problem now is that I have somehow mislaid the cable!

Ok, for my Braun S7 the answer is no (probably). If I plug it an and try to switch it on while plugged in a little plug icon flashes, which I think means "unplug first". If I unplug it it works OK. Which means a "no" for mains powered operation.

The only problem is that it is not a healthy device and it has started behaving weirdly and refuses to work at all sometimes. So what it does and what it should do may not be the same.

Electric shavers. I worked with a Jew once and he told me that the reason Orthodox Jews had beards was that there was a sacred spot on their face somewhere and shaving with a blade razor would defile themselves. MY workmate was clean shaven and said his not so Orthodox community considered an electric shaver would not breach the belief.

I once bought some Sainsbury branded blade for my Gillette. I noticed they were made in Israel. They gave the worst shave ever and I binned them immediately. It's all starting to make sense now.

I dont think theyre quite as good on heavier growth. I dont have an especially heavy growth and the rotary gives a lovely silken finish (ive given up on a decade of full-beard for the moustache look), but I understand that the reciprocating foil type are better for heavier growth.
