Puffballs are easily identifiable and make good eating. Large ones, in good condition, are worth a few bob at speciality restaurants.

Looking at that and at the photo, I reckon they're probably Agarics, but I don't think I'll take the chance. Shame - I quite like the idea of food-from-nature like that.

Depends where you find them.

I'm assuming you'd find them somewhere "wild",where dogs have access to.

I imagine most chemists have much more important things to do, and most also have no working knowledge of fungi.

@gavroche lives in France, where chemists are required by law to identify fungi. Ours have the much more important duty of sticky warning labels on pill boxes.

Kind of. That is rule of thumb when scavenging the corpses of mushroom-poisoned hunter-gatherers. Usually ok once through the liver.

Yes, but manure isn't the same as dog shoot.

Oyster mushrooms grow in woodland.
It just goes to show that any general guide to picking and eating mushrooms should not be followed, unless backed up with some scientific analysis.
