I am sooooo sick of the "You Don't pay Road tax" thing, I would gladly pay a nominal sum just to proudly display a tax disk, obviously as VED is based on "Green" principles I think my bikes impact is very low, in terms of extra CO2 I exhale I suspect its lower than 100 gm/km which means its zero rate anyway

I would just love to proudly point at my disk.

Silly person  - don't you realise it's got nothing to do with 'road tax' in reality but is about a general dislike of someone doing something 'different'. If it wasn't the 'road tax' argument, it's red lights... pavement cycling... lights... etc.,

yes, I agree but it would really pleas me to produce it to the anti cyclist bloke I work with, drives a Merc and thinks bikes should be in parks.

Point him to here, and then he can read that I think he's a James Blunt. I hope it was his car that Cab did a little vomit on last week.

Then tell him he's a w@nker.

By the way - not all Merc drivers are like that - I've got one - and four cycles. Oh and tell him he should be getting a Merc bicycle... they do make them. Merc road bike £2750 carbon fibre frameset.

Seriously - if the guy winds you up - don't let him. Deep breaths. Ignore him. He's probably enjoying winding you up so don't take the bait. Really - if it's not the hoary old chesnut of 'road tax' it's something else, such as red light jumping, which as any fule noe, is only ever done by cyclists as no motorist ever, but ever breaks the law.. etc., etc..

You are correct about paying VED - you already do...at the full rate!

VED is assessed on carbon emissions.

All vehicles emitting less than 100g of CO2 per kilometre are in band A (Cycles are there for in this category) The duty for Band A is ZERO

So you have been fully assessed for VED and fully pay the appropriate band.

Now rephrase the question - if this is unacceptable - is the questioner suggesting that VED should be increased?

Great shutup line!

Tell them

'You own a car not the road and the day you amend the rules I'll comply, until then you're the one losing sleep over it. Now get a life and **** off '

usually works

You do pay ved, for your car and your bicycle. anyway even if you did pay a physical amount they wouldn't be happy, the oppressed motorists would come out with some other line like "you should pay insurance", "your should pay a sweat tax", "get off the road".

Tell the James Blunt that he has less right to be on the road than a cyclist. As a driver, I'm only on the road by license, tax, insurance, MOT, and if I misbehave my privilege to drive can be taken away from me. As a cyclist, I have the right to be there.

I wouldn't be happy to display a VED disc on my bike. It will cost the tax payer i.e. you and me millions to implement. We might not have to pay sod all for the disc, but the Government are going to have to employ people to administer it, which wouldn't be cheap.
I've never had the "road tax" comments from drivers, but if I did I'd ask them if they would be happy for their taxes to contribute to my free VED disc just to wind them up.

VED does not apply to pedal cycles. It's not like we pay it at the relevant rate on a bicycles, as VED doesn't apply to pedal cycles anyway. It purely relates to motorised transport and as regards private vehicles is based on carbon emissions. As there is a class of motorised vehicles where the VED is zero (where CO2 emission figure is up to 100g/km) then pedal cycles are simply being treated the same as a low-carbon private vehicle. Of course if Mr Merc is so stupid as to whinge about paying his hard-earned dosh on VED, but doesn't want to ride a bicycle, he always has the option of changing his motor to one where he pays nada... his choice!
