Continued journeys are absolutely a commute though:

Commute: Verb (with object): exchange positions without a change in value; "These operators commute with each other"

Cycling from somewhere to somewhere else is an exchange in positions, and not being paid for it implies no change in value.

i've actually applied for a job in auld reekie. perfect (would be a bit of upheaval but we have family there), as edinburgh is not so big that commuting from any part to any other would be a challenge, although some of the hills will be good training…
