I have a cctv that connects to the Internet but needs a static ip.

I want to put into a new garage conversion. Do I need to run cables or will the Ethernet connections on the apple express do?

I run apple airport for my master wifi and express to extend the range (large house).

I don't know anything about apple airport/express, but if the camera and the PC are both on the same LAN then you should be able to assign a static IP address to the camera and the PC should be able to connect (make sure however that the static IP address is outside the range of the dynamic IP addresses assigned by the router's DHCP server). If the devices are on different LANs then it becomes a little more complex. Also, if your devices support Wi-Fi, then I don't see why you would need cables.

You should then be able to connect the decoder via an Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi to your computer LAN via the router. As I said you will need to make sure the configured Static IP address does not conflict with the Dynamic IP addresses assigned by the router.

By the way, if you need to access the decoder from over the internet using a known Static IP address then you will need to request a Static IP address for your router from your Internet Service Provider and you will also need to open a Port on your router to the decoder.

By the way, if you need to access the decoder from over the internet using a known Static IP address then you will need to request a Static IP address for your router from your Internet Service Provider and you will also need to open a Port on your router to the decoder.

You could use DynDNS.org to provide you with an Internet routed DNS entry to your non-static ISP assigned IP address.

Ok, let me see if I understand.....

The airport base station is Ethernet connected to the fibre optic router. The airport base station provides the wifi....the wifi is extended by using an airport express.

Connect the decoder to the Ethernet connection on the airport express.

Then contact bt to assign as static ip to the router and ensure that the airport express and base are set up to keep the decoder assigned to the static IP address.....is that right or have I misunderstood?

Not quite, you can't assign that external facing static IP address to your CCTV decoder directly. You need to give the decoder a static (internal) IP address, which will depend on the router setup, if its Apple then probably a 10.0.x.x address?

The external IP address, once issued from BT (if they will at all), will be set on the broadband modem / router.

You will then need to understand which ports (TCP/UDP) the CCTV decoder communicates on and setup port forwarding for that traffic so that it is forwarded directly to the decoders static IP address.

Might be a good time for you to Google port forwarding

Sorry that's what I meant, assign the ip codes internally on the apple wifi.

I'll contact bt tomorrow.

That part is in the instructions for the decoder software. I just wanted to know if I needed to run new cables before I box up the internal walls.

No you'll be fine. I have an Airport Extreme and Airport Express for extending and plugging in PCs without wireless. So as long as the two devices are within range of each other all should be good.

Nice one thanks for the help.....no doubt when I actually get around to connecting the decoders to the net, I'll be asking loads of questions....:smile::smile:
