Ha! I had to go to a meeting today at some council office. About an hour in came a message over the tanoy:

DING DONG "Attention please, there are two bicycles....." at this point the room erupted into laughter and I couldn't hear the rest of the message. But knowing that my bike was well locked up and not causing any inconvenience I stayed putt.
Returned to my bike about an hour later to find a note attached to it written in a childish hand, reading "In future please park your bike properly". I'll grant you, it was locked to railings as the bike racks were full, but it wasn't causing any obstruction.
I continued to unlock my bike, but was next approached by a short, bald security man. He was FURIOUS!!!
"Did you not hear my tanoy message?" he says. At which point I said I hadn't as everyone had laughed uproariously at him as soon as he started speaking. He gave me a telling off as I should not have parked at the railings.

Ho hum. I had a lovely ride home anyway! Though I remain very surprised that he disturbed the entire building with a message about my bike being attached to the railings.

For those of a certain age, who will remember THE Fence

What should I put on the Fence

Basically guy told not to padlock bike to a fence and started a campaign to bolt / lock / attach items to the fence

Went on for a couple of years
Ha ha! When I told my OH what had happened he told me about the guy locking kettles etc to the fence. I'd mount a similar campaign myself but I can't be bothered!

Did he have steam coming out of his ears? If not, he couldn't have been very furious...
He had that shaky voice that people sometimes get when they're angry. Either that or he was scared of me.

Local council offices don't have enough cycle parking. 6 visitor spaces for West Norfolk's head office and councillors use them too. That's less than a typical medium sized village hall and only slightly more than a large corner shop has to have if built or rebuilt today. Was the one with the railings any better?

Given this was a council building, I'm willing to place money he head been asked to do just that. Our local council offices have 'no bike' signs attached to all their railings and security staff have been told to remove bikes for 'security' reasons.

DAHIKT.
Aye, and I've been told to remove my bike by security people from near the entrance of Queen Elizabeth Hospital for aesthetic reasons. I've also been threatened with prosecution by Greenwich Park ''royal'' police for not immediately removing my bike from railings, despite there being absolutely no secure stands (at the time) anywhere within the park. The man could not tell me of any secure place to lock a bicycle nearby. This was also for ''security reasons''. The orificer explained that is was to do with bike bombs. I returned at the same time the next day in a car and parked 3 metres away. Perfectly legally. Now, would anyone like to explain to me why a bike is more of a security risk than an estate car in virtually the same place? 200 parking spaces versus zero bike provision in a recreational area and they talk of security! I very nearly D-locked the idiot. And he did actually flinch when I swung round with the lock in my hand.
