Somewhere in the deep dark underbelly of subterranean London is an army of fairground goldfish, quietly biding their time amongst the sewage and effluent. They plot their revenge and their brilliant fishy scientists have found a way to create legs, albeit with webbed feet, and small dinosaur like arms. In their hatcheries, the first generation with opposable thumbs have been born and now it is only a matter of time before they can master holding and firing a Beretta .22. Then their armies will be unleashed and the cats had better run as they will be going against the wall first. Once the cats have been dealt with, then it will be our turn. Billy Smart, you should be afraid, very afraid.

Goldfish have a memory with a very small capacity, so small that every time they make a circuit of their bowl, what they see outside is a whole fascinating new world. Ocasionally along comes a freak goldfish whose memory lasts about one second longer than a tour of the bowl; all becomes boringly familiar and after a few weeks this goldfish becomes frustrated and decides to take a running (swimming?) jump outside to explore the world..... and dies on the carpet.

....which is why there are so few clever goldfish.

I have fish. Not goldfish though, but tropical fish. We have axolotls too. They are very relaxing to watch, easy to keep (ish) and pretty. I have had fish for years. We did adopt a large goldfish once, it was a customer's and she asked if we would take it as it had outgrown its tank. We had him in our spare tank before he was put into our last landlords pond a couple of months back. He was quite dull in comparison to the tropicals.
