I think you would be surprised at how many kids do know Tom and Jerry.
Cartoon Network channels have them running every day. Some of the new ones and some of the old.

I remember snow chains on the school bus. Today they close the schools at the slightest hint of bad weather in case Mummy prangs the X5 on the 500 yard school run.
