Mechanical jack hammers at roadworks. Can't remember the last time I saw one of these being used. They used to frighten the life out of me when I was a kid.

Both.the first paper discs were novel the ones with the little switches on the tacho driver 1 and driver 2

It worked for us on local four-digit phone numbers. You tapped each number in rapid taps on the handset rest with a gap in between each 'number' in taps.
worked on my parent's number as well (3213).
I think the ability to tap out numbers was also a reason for the emergency number being 999. Logic would seem that an emergency number should be the quickest to dial, so should have been 111. But when turning the analogue dial, it was too easy to miss-register a 1 in error, so the 9 was used where you have to register 9 taps in one go and you couldn't accidentally register 9 by accident.
